ADHD And Game Development - Tips And Tricks

I don't know about you, but as a person with ADHD, I have trouble sticking with my game development. Staying on task and getting things done in decent time. I get very hyper-focused on a game, I end up posting about it, and then it ends up late. What do I do to cope? What is the best approach to this issue? While I know I'm not perfect with this, I do know what's been working for me. So I've got some tips for you, whether you're a beginner or advanced.

Assuming you already have a game idea laid out that you're working on, don't announce it until you're very far into it. It's easy to get excited and think, "I've gotten so much done, I can finish this in 2 months max!" but be very honest with yourself. You're going to end up distracted with something at some point. Whether that's fixing assets or in your own personal life. I personally give myself an extra month window. If I think it'll be done in 2 months, ill say 3 instead. And please, don't announce it yet. It's better to announce closer to last minute than for hype to die down when you have to delay your game release.

Know that it's very likely that when you come up with ideas for new games, you're going to want to start them right away. I mean, I think most devs feel that way. Instead of getting off track with your current game, make a binder for your game idea. Write down everything you want to remember about the idea, so you can come back to it when you're done with your current project.

On that note, write down everything! If you have a thought about your game, and you're not putting it into action ASAP, write it down, so you don't forget! Motivation is a big thing. I have the problem that I get bored very easily and lose motivation. The way I get around that is by working on several different parts of the same section of the game at the same time. When I get bored with coding one section, like collision for example, ill work on dialog instead. And switch back and forth. It helps to keep extra notes if you do this, so you don't confuse yourself when you get back to it. I leave my notes in my code, though the binder idea is also great for this.

Try to remember that you're not alone! And if you need support, comment on this post and I can help you out.
